The three main components of the project are: quickly and easily recording natural sounding voices, changing/voice morphing those voices to make them child friendly, and the integration of these two into AAC systems, most recently and notably in connection with visual scene displays.

Welcome to the Language Banking Project Wiki!
The goal of this project is to help learners on their way to more comprehensive AAC systems, as well as help users who have systems in place better store and retrieve their stories, scripts, and writing. This wiki is set up to be a place to share ideas and resources.

The project began when the step by step switches we were using to record same age and gender peers for our students were taking up too much time and energy. We began recording with an iPod, but quickly moved to using the computer. A major shift happened when I found Audacity. With this program, you can record a co-planned sequenced social script, some academic content for a class, or maybe a piece of writing like a poem. Once you record it and save it as an MP3 you not only have it to use at will, but you can also use Audacity to change adult voices to kid friendly voices. It is amazing to see the look on the students faces when we ask them if they want a kid voice to be able to read their writing. One student made her father cry as she brought a letter home to read to him for the first time using a child friendly voice.
Although this project started with children who were working to get AAC devices, it seems that it may be able to help more advanced users as well. Consider an elementary age user running SDPro with Picture Word Power or a custom set of boards. You could create a set of quick message boards that had the students parent's voice recorded and transformed by Audacity.
